Sam Corcoran Cllr Sam Corcoran, Sandbach Local Councillor & Media Officer of the Cheshire East Labour Group has written to his MP & the Tory Business minister about Climate Change.

I set out below an email I have sent to Fiona Bruce MP on Climate Change.

If you share my concerns then please email Fiona.bruce.mp@parliament.uk or Rt. Hon Sajid Javid MP at enquiries@bis.gsi.gov.uk

I believe that climate change is the greatest challenge facing our generation. As Pope Francis has said “Doomsday predictions can no longer be met with irony or disdain. We may well be leaving to coming generations debris, desolation and filth. The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even now periodically occur in different areas of the world.
I am pleased that UK is now making efforts to move away from fossil fuels and to develop clean energy.

Locally, solar panels are being installed onto the roof of the Westfields council offices in Sandbach. However, I was amazed to discover that UK is subsidising fossil fuels abroad through the UK Export Finance (UKEF). In 2013, UKEF allocated a huge £1.13bn to fossil fuels which is over 300 times more than they gave to renewable energies! CAFOD research shows that from 2009-13, almost all UKEF support went to fossil fuels.

Other countries such as France recently pledged to end export credits for coal plants. Even China has pledged to “strictly control” financing of all high-carbon projects at home and abroad. Surely the UK should take similar bold steps by making the shift from financing fossil fuels to sustainable energy.

Please will you raise this issue with Rt. Hon Sajid Javid MP asking him to commit to ceasing all UK support for all fossil fuel projects overseas – coal plants or mining- including through export credit guarantees.
