Laura Smith, your Labour Party candidate for Crewe and Nantwich
Hello, I am Laura Smith. I’m honoured to have been selected as the Labour Party candidate for Crewe and Nantwich. I want to thank everybody for their messages of support and hope to see you all on the campaign trail.
The communities of Crewe and Nantwich deserve a strong voice who will champion local concerns and priorities. As a working mum, born and raised in the constituency, I believe I can provide that strong voice that we all need in parliament.
During my campaign, I will be proudly standing up for our community and fighting for the privilege of being able to represent you in Westminster.
I don’t normally like talking about myself but I believe it important that you get a sense of the person that is seeking to be your elected representative, come June 8th.
Like both of my children, I was born in Leighton Hospital and grew up in Nantwich. I studied at Brine Leas School, South Cheshire College and MMU Cheshire Campus in Crewe, which now faces closure. I live in Nantwich with my partner, Steve, and my two children, Bertie and Hallie and we are joined at the weekend by my stepson Jacob.
My working life has been spent focusing on my career as a teacher and raising my family. Whilst a single parent, I decided to set up my own local tutoring business that has since worked with hundreds of children in Crewe and Nantwich.
Campaigning for change
I recently spearheaded a local campaign against school cuts.
As a teacher, parent and small business owner working closely with local schools, I have seen first-hand how this Government is letting down our children. Many of you will have joined me in recent protests or will have heard me speak at the public meeting in Crewe.
Education will be front and centre throughout my campaign. I care passionately about the children living in our community and cannot bear to see them let down any longer. Our schools face real-terms cuts of approximately £3bn, which is putting schools in our towns under enormous pressure.
But the education crisis is indicative of a wider issue. The Conservative government’s policies are failing ordinary working families as the cost of living soars but their incomes do not. An entire generation is being let down by the lack of investment in quality jobs and industry.
My promise to you
If elected, I pledge to work tirelessly on your behalf and will be Crewe and Nantwich’s voice in Westminster and not Westminster’s voice in Crewe and Nantwich. I hope to see you all in the coming weeks.
