At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, the Government clearly stated there would be whatever support was required to help local councils to maintain essential services.
Throughout the pandemic Cheshire East Council has maintained such services together with providing support for its most vulnerable residents, care workers, children, and local businesses. For example, a full kerbside refuse collection service has been maintained throughout.
However, the Government is now threatening to renege on its promise, leaving Cheshire East Council along with other councils facing the prospect of making deep cuts in services.
Therefore, the Labour Group on Cheshire East Council has made the following pledge to protect the most vulnerable members of our communities in the event that cuts in services have to be made.
“The failure of the Government to honour its promise to reimburse Council’s for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in Cheshire East Council facing a multi-million pound hole in its budget, and the prospect of having to make major cuts in services.
The Labour Group on Cheshire East Council pledges to protect the most vulnerable in our communities as far as possible from the impact of any service cuts. There must be no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, as this far too often means the greatest burden falling upon the poorest and most vulnerable in our communities.”
