Yesterday (30 December 2020) Labour voted in favour of the European Union (Future Relationship) Bill. This is not because it is a good Brexit deal but to avoid the outcome of a chaotic no deal.
We respect the decision of the British people as set out in the 2016 EU referendum and 2019 General Election.
Particularly against the challenges posed by the pandemic, we recognise the need for our country to move on from Brexit. We now need to turn our attention and resources to tackling the pandemic.
Labour will work to ensure the government uses the new UK/EU agreement as a floor from which to build back better. This must involve government-led improvements and investment to fulfil the Prime Minister’s promise on levelling up.
